Robert Glasper's R+R=NOW is Album van de Week

Robert Glasper is als begenadigd jazzpianist nog nooit bang geweest voor een muzikaal experiment. Voor zijn nieuwste project werkt hij samen met Terrace Martin, rapper en muzikant, maar wellicht het bekendst als producer. Hij werkte met o.a. Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson en Raphael Saadiq.

Samen met trompettist Christian Scott, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Justin Tyson en multi-instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin vormen ze R+R=NOW. En die diverse achtergrond is goed terug te horen in de muziek, die genres overstijgt en jazz, soul, R&B en hip-hop combineert.

Glasper vertelt: "R+R NOW tells our story from our point of view. Everybody's sound is so different, but we all come from the same concrete garden. Its a very honest, fluid sound that rings of hip-hop, EDM, jazz, at times - hell - reggae ... a bunch of cats that respect each other so much that we always pass the ball."

De naam R+R=NOW staat voor Reflect+Respond=NOW. Bedacht door Glasper nadat hij geïnspireerd werd door Nina Simone. In een interview dat ook in de documentaire What Happened, Miss Simone? voorbij komt, vertelt de zangeres vol vuur wat volgens haar de plicht van een artiest is. "I choose to reflect the times and the situations in which I find myself. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times?"
